Vercruysse Laurens began his career in the dredging industry, specializing in breakwater construction and revetment rock works throughout the Middle East. His early hands-on involvement in complex marine construction projects laid a strong technical foundation and deepened his understanding of coastal engineering challenges. As his career progressed, he transitioned into hydrographic surveying, applying his expertise to large-scale infrastructure developments. His contributions include key roles in the Tuas Port expansion in Singapore and the Soai Rap River deepening project in Vietnam, where he supported accurate seabed mapping and ensured survey operations met strict engineering requirements.

In recent years, his professional focus has shifted toward the offshore sector, first in Europe and then in Asia. For the past three years, Laurens has served as Survey Manager at CDWE, overseeing offshore survey activities with a strong emphasis on data integrity, operational efficiency, and safety. His comprehensive field experience and leadership continue to support the successful delivery of complex offshore projects.

Brief Introduction of the Department

【The Survey Department】

The Survey Department plays a central role in both offshore and onshore operations. It provides accurate positioning, data-acquisition, and data-processing services that support every phase of a project — from mobilisation and equipment setup through to the final delivery of survey data.

Interns joining the Survey Department are introduced to a blend of technical work and practical field activities. They will learn how survey equipment is installed and calibrated, observe how measurements are taken during operations, and support the processing of acquired data into charts, maps, and reports.

The department works with a range of industry-standard software, including Qinsy (QPS) for data acquisition, AutoClean (Beamworx) for multibeam cleaning, and AutoCAD Civil 3D or BricsCAD for mapping and design tasks. Interns may have the opportunity to gain familiarity with these tools under supervision, depending on project schedules and operational needs.

Survey interns also experience close collaboration with dredge operators, project engineers, and offshore teams. This exposure gives them a clear understanding of how survey data supports decision-making and ensures smooth project execution.

The environment is international, dynamic, and often operationally demanding, so interns benefit from being flexible, proactive, and comfortable communicating in English in a fast-moving team setting.

Internship Job Description

Interns in the Survey Department support a combination of fieldwork and office-based tasks. Typical activities include:

- Assisting with the setup and calibration of survey equipment on vessels or onshore sites.

- Supporting data acquisition during operations and observing measurement procedures.

- Helping to process survey data into plans, volume reports, and client-ready documentation.

- Gaining familiarity with industry-standard tools under mentor supervision.

- Working alongside surveyors, engineers, and offshore teams in an international, multi-disciplinary environment.

Preferred Intern Skill Sets or Qualities

- A flexible, hands-on person who enjoys both technical and practical tasks.

- Someone motivated to learn and comfortable working in dynamic, real-world conditions.

- A problem-solver who communicates clearly and positively with colleagues from different nationalities.

- Fluent in English (spoken and written) due to the international work environment.

- Basic IT skills (Windows, Office, file management, etc.).

- Preferably some familiarity (not mandatory) with one or more of the following software tools:

AutoCAD Civil 3D or BricsCAD
Qinsy by QPS
AutoClean by Beamworx

- No prior survey experience is required — a positive attitude and willingness to learn are most important.
