Regarding TSMC decision to build a plant in Saxony, the Minister-President once again emphasized, TSMC chose Dresden. We emerged victorious in fierce competition, and this is a major achievement. The world’s largest and most successful semiconductor chip manufacturer is investing in and constructing a new plant in the heart of Europe.
He also pointed out the key factor behind TSMC choice of Dresden: Without a doubt, it is Saxony’s comprehensive microelectronics ecosystem including the existing supply chain industries, outstanding research institutions, and strengths in education and training.
(Note: Silicon Saxony is home to over 3,650 companies and more than 81,000 employees. It is the largest microelectronics cluster in Europe, producing one-third of all chips made in Europe.)
The Minister President further stressed that to meet the future demand for semiconductor talent, Saxony is investing hundreds of millions of euros. One such initiative is the Saxon Microelectronics Vocational Training Program (Sächsisches Ausbildungscluster Mikroelektronik, abbreviated as SAM), which includes the establishment of the Dresden Center for Vocational Training in Electrical Engineering (focused on theoretical instruction) offering 2,200 training spots, and the expansion of inter-company vocational training centers (focused on practical training). These facilities are expected to be completed by the 2028–2029 training year and are anticipated to become a global benchmark in the future.
