Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Taiwan

Through the NTU International Mentorship Program 2023, Patrick Carlos, a Master's student from the Philippines majoring in Agricultural Economics, interned at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce Taiwan (CanCham) during the summer. Under the mentorship of Chairman Brandon Thompson, Patrick conducted membership management, participated in events and meetings, and undertook business development research between Taiwan and Canada.

Initially, Patrick simply aimed to expand his knowledge of agricultural policy analysis at CanCham. However, under Brandon's guidance, Patrick not only deepened his studies but also gained whole new experiences. As a Marketing Intern, Patrick handled the CanCham's social media, assisted with membership management, and supported for various events. For example, he attended CanCham’s “Canada Day,” the largest event held by foreigners in Taiwan as well as the largest “Canada Day” outside of Canada. Patrick contributed to the collection of sponsors' application information and various tasks on the event day. Included in such a large-scale international event for the first time, Patrick learned to balance professionalism and flexibility in the workplace. During the internship, he was also invited to join Brandon in business meetings, which granted him insight into international business people's mindset and the chance to apply his theoretical learning to real-world settings. Motivated to delve deeper into bilateral trade, Patrick even initiated research on trade between Taiwan and Canada hoping to help Canadian businessmen in entering the Taiwan market in the future.
