The importance of environmental sustainability has become increasingly essential in modern society, and companies like Covestro are the pioneer of this movement. Covestro is a world-leading manufacturer of high-quality polymer materials and components that enhance sustainability and improve quality of life in various industries. In summer 2022, Syeda Zehra, a Pakistani Ph.D. student at NTU, participated in the NTU International Mentorship Program with Covestro Taiwan to gain insights into working culture and gain experience in her field of study.

The project given to Syeda was Intellectual Property (IP) search, where she was tasked to outline available patents and select those relevant to product development. Under the guidance of Dr. Steve Shih, Syeda was able to analyze over 800 patents for a single product, deepening her knowledge of IP search and understanding of the patent search process.

The mentorship program is designed to foster a comfortable and confident learning-by-working environment, and Syeda appreciated the opportunity to ask questions and learn the difference between industrial research and lab research. Dr. Shih, on the other hand, believes that the mentorship program is an innovative way to find talent for any company and hopes that the program will continue to broaden the talent pool of students at NTU.
