In the summer 2022, Alexander is a master's student at NTU studying Political Science, and he has rich experience in writing, design, translation, and filmmaking, as well as experience working at the British and Singapore Embassies in Beijing as an interpreter. Alex also worked as a translator and marketing specialist in Tokyo. This year, Alex is working with partners from Taiwan, Singapore, and England to create a film production company.

Alex believes that combining newly learned skills in journalism with previous experience in filmmaking enables his work and passion to have greater influence. Therefore, through the NTU Mentorship Program, he chose to intern at CommonWealth Magazine under the mentorship of the Managing Editor of CommonWealth Magazine’s English website, Kwangyin Liu.

Kwangyin Liu gave Alex the freedom to pursue stories and projects that inspired him. Alex, armed with his camera and unique perspective, sought out diverse Taiwanese people from various cities for his stories, which are aimed at capturing the attention of international audiences. Kwangyin Liu gave Alex invaluable advice on journalism culture in Taiwan, and opportunities to build professional connections, which enabled Alex to conduct his interviews and work smoothly. During his internship, Alex interviewed Sunset Rollercoaster and the CMO of Taipei 101 and has also independently driven to Pingtung to interview and film mango and pineapple farmers affected by trade tensions between Taiwan and China. Overall, Alex’s previous experience in filmmaking and Kwangyin Liu’s expertise in journalism have propelled Alex to further develop his career and personal interests.
