Through the NTU IMP, Indonesian civil engineering senior Orville began his internship at the renowned global engineering firm, Bechtel. Guided by mentor Lim Wei Song, he had the opportunity to apply his civil engineering knowledge to real-world projects, gaining hands-on experience in the field.

Orville's main responsibility was the structural design of steel components for an LNG terminal. His work included 2D drafting, 3D Building Information Modeling (BIM), and refining structural designs. He quickly discovered that while the projects seemed similar to those in school, the practical experience was vastly different. School projects often allow for idealized scenarios and flexibility, but at Bechtel, every design step had to meet strict regulations and accommodate multiple requirements. Mentor Lim also encouraged Orville to connect with colleagues during daily 15-minute tea breaks, helping him integrate into the team and build valuable professional relationships.

Orville’s time at Bechtel allowed him to not only put academic knowledge into action but also develop a critical perspective from a company viewpoint, considering all the intricate details that could impact project success. These experiences will serve as invaluable assets in his future career.
