Hong Chiang Technology
Gabriel Syahrianto Napitupulu, a junior student in Mechanical Engineering from Indonesia, embarked on an internship at Hong Chiang Technology through the NTU International Mentorship Program (NTU IMP) 2025, under the guidance of Wilson Hung, engineer and first-time technical mentor.
Hong Chiang Technology, an automation company, collaborates with several well-known Taiwanese restaurant chains such as Sushi Express, Gatten Sushi, and Hama Sushi. Its innovative food delivery robots and smart restaurant solutions have also gained international recognition, with products exported to more than 40 countries.
At Hong Chiang, Gabriel became part of the team developing service robots for the food and beverage sector. His main task involved labeling and preparing image datasets that train robots to recognize paths, signs, and obstacles using front-facing cameras. The project gave Gabriel an opportunity to translate classroom knowledge into hands-on problem-solving with real-world applications. Mentor Wilson brought both his teaching background and passion for education into the internship. He guided Gabriel through technical processes, from dataset creation to AI troubleshooting, and shared his coding logic to deepen understanding.
Gabriel concludes his experience with a renewed outlook: “IMP helped me realize that success at work is not just about knowledge, but also about time management, teamwork, and adaptability. It opened my eyes to real-world challenges and gave me the opportunity to apply what I’ve learned in a meaningful and practical way.”
