PERSONAL BIO

Dr. Cheng graduated from National Sun Yat-sen University with a degree in Marine Environment and Engineering, specializing in wave theory and field investigations. His dissertation, “Analysis of Regular Progressive Wave Trains on Three-Dimensional Ripple Bottom,” explored the interaction between wave motion and seabed topography through theoretical analysis, providing insights into the mechanisms that generate extraordinary large waves.

He has since been engaged in Fisheries resource assessments and Coastal environmental awareness, contributing to Taiwan’s marine research and conservation efforts. Currently, he serves at the Taiwan Ocean Research Institute (TORI) , National Institutes of Applied Research (NIAR), focusing on radar remote sensing, including the analysis of raw echo signals and the application of surface current data.

Brief Introduction of the Department

Since its establishment in 2008, the Taiwan Ocean Research Institute (TORI) has been dedicated to advancing marine exploration technologies, with the Taiwan Oceans Radar Observing System (TOROS) as one of its core missions. TORI has deployed multiple Coastal Ocean Dynamics Applications Radar (CODAR) high-frequency radar stations along Taiwan’s coastline and in the Penghu Islands, creating a real-time ocean observation network that supports offshore wind energy, marine research, and search-and-rescue operations.

TORI’s radar systems estimate surface current velocities from Doppler-shifted radar echoes and are supported by a robust data validation and quality-management process. To ensure accuracy and reliability, TORI also conducts long-term verification using Data Marker Buoys (DMBs) and Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP)-equipped buoys, converting their drift tracks into velocity vectors for cross-comparison with radar observations.

Internship Job Description

During the internship at the Taiwan Ocean Research Institute (TORI), students will gain hands-on experience across the full operational workflow of the Taiwan Oceans Radar Observing System (TOROS). The program covers front-end system installation, testing, and maintenance, as well as back-end data processing, analysis, and application.

Rather than focusing only on data use, interns will have the opportunity to engage in every stage of the process—from hardware deployment, data acquisition, and quality control to scientific analysis and practical applications such as engineering assessments and search-and-rescue operations.

Through field participation and cross-disciplinary training, students will develop a comprehensive understanding of how ocean radar data are produced and applied, while strengthening their problem-solving and independent operational skills. This experience provides a strong foundation for future research in ocean observation and data science.
