Carrefour Taiwan
NTU OIA met with Elena Quiroga-Fernandez from Spain, a Ph.D. student studying Earth System Sciences within TIGP, who interned this summer through the NTU International Mentorship Program 2022 at Carrefour, a French multinational retail and wholesaling corporation. . During her summer mentorship, Elena received invaluable guidance from her mentor Marilyn Su, Corporate Sustainability Director at Carrefour, also the Executive Chief of Carrefour Taiwan Foundation, learning about Taiwan's policies and regulations related to sustainability, and participating in activities hosted by Carrefour’s Cultural and Educational Foundation. Overall, she concluded her internship with a deeper understanding of Carrefour's CSR and Food Transformation programs.
Under the guidance of Marilyn Su, Elena conducted research on the "low-carbon diet" program promoted by Europe, and applied this knowledge to the local Taiwan market. She also helped in the promotion of Carrefour's latest "Re-series" products, which advocate using sustainable commodities. Moreover, she also got to know how fresh products, such as Leopard Cat Organic Banana and Cage-free Eggs, can serve as an integral part of Carrefour’s food transformation plan. She felt this internship experience gave her an opportunity to spice up her tough life as a Ph.D. student and to turn what she has learned and loved into practice in Taiwan, not to mention that she has made a lot of progress with her Chinese during this internship.
